Coronado is a six channel sound installation that is inspired by the sonic experience I had at the Coronado beach in California. Using an ocean drum controlled by autonomous mechanical arms as the source of the soundscape, a feedback loop is created and the sound waves are bounced across the six sound channels, creating a spatial interpretation of the sound scape.

Within 140 Characters is an interactive sonic composition which aims to explore the social media phenomenon of Twitter, and its ability to not just entertain, but also give voice and power to those who participate in it. Constrictive, or perhaps liberating, with a unique space of 140 characters, Twitter becomes a personal broadcast station for a sundry of proclamations, from succinct to banal. This sound installation aims to investigate this by grabbing live data from Twitter to create an immediate soundscape.

Within 140 Characters is a selected proposal for Substation’s Sound Art Open Call substation.org/within-140-characters/

Supported by MediaLab Lasalle

Spring Studies is a series of generative works that is a result...

Spring Studies is a series of generative works that is a result of spring like movements of repelling, acceleration and deceleration.
Flood Helmet is featured in the new book See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception by Madeline Schwartzman. Somewhere early this year I was contacted by madeline about this new project of hers that investigates the relationship between art, design, science and most importantly the human body. I didn’t need to think twice before saying yes. I haven’t gotten this book but I will and once i do, updates will follow. Here are some links.

Perceptio is an audiovisual concert that investigates the state of our perception towards pollution and climate change in a local context. Perceptio combines cinematics and generative art / animation with sound and music that is a whole, inseparable from one another. Collecting sound and visual samples from various parts of Singapore, these field recordings are then harmoniously combined with computer generated visuals and sounds to create an immersive experience. Perceptio journeys through different forms of invisible problems that persist in our everyday or future lives and questions our highly mediated society.

Interface design for Visual Sense Software, a visualization tool...

Interface design for Visual Sense Software, a visualization tool developed for the Culturemaps project.

“Objects for Our Sick Planet ” is a series of work in response to the general public’s attitude and lack of awareness towards issues in pollution and how it can eventually lead to global warming and climate change. Each of these objects translates and highlights everyday situations and locations into visible and perceptible experiences which otherwise are unnoticed and neglected by humans.

Object #03 – Bright Noise

Bright Noise deals with the representation of light pollution in many art works or scientific studies. In many of such works, light pollution is represented through a long exposed image of a long shot at the skyline or city. Very often, it looks nicer and aesthetical rather than a problem that needs to be highlighted. The second object is a mobile field survey tool that scans the light scape of an environment, the result of this is done with a wireless webcan embedded in the tool which does a slit scan.

The scanned image is then pixilated into color blocks in which each block carries a number value of the light source. A program is then activated to scan through each of these pixel blocks and each value would then be translated into a sound. Clicks represent dimmer lights and noise represents bright lights. Silence represents darkness. The entire soundscape would represent the light pollution level of an area.

Flood Helmet

The Flood Helmet is a mobile device that visualises possible future flood scenarios based on the user’s physical location. The flood level inside the helmet is determined by the GPS location and elevation height of the land that the user is standing on. Flood Helmet gives users a sensory and experiential exploration of their surrounding areas and the future scenario it might hold. This project aims to create a sense of immediacy in users regarding to issues in the rising sea level and that disasters are not always faraway from us.

Air Monsters is a toy instrument that investigates the air content in the environment that we live in with a playful approach. This is done through the process of capture, analysis, and visualization. Harmful elements in the air are visualised as animated monsters that have a life of their own, whereby mundane data is translated into a metaphorical representations.

The Infinite Depth of Consciousness

The Infinite Depth of Consciousness

Visualization of Twitter Activities created with processing in collaboration with Alvin.C . The Infinite Depth of Consciousness is a dynamic and multidimensional representation of virtual consciousness and thoughts on the internet. Making use of the twitter api, we are able to collect real-time data of tweets from all around the world.

This work has been awarded with a crowbars award in 2009

The Infinite Depth of Consciousness gives shape to conversations and collective thoughts on Twitter. By means of interactivity and user generated searches, this project allows users to navigate through intimate details of people’s thoughts and at the same time observe a larger social trend. This experiment breaks away from more established visualisation genre by not just offering a visual pattern but also the ability to interact with the data.

Users start off with an array of trends. One can choose to explore or simply go straight to search. The objective of this experiment lies in the layering of information. Everytime a new search is sent for query, a new set of data overlays the previous data and overlapping users and friendships are linked together.

Visual Movements

Visual Movements is about the observation study of user reaction and interaction towards a platform, in the form of a new technology. How would one react to something that they’ve never seen or used before? How would users react to a new technology without the comfort of instruction manuals? These are what I will be exploring in my project.
